Email messages can get out of control rapidly. One way to make your Gmail inbox more organized by adding automatic filters to your messages as they arrive. If you've done this with a desktop email program like Outlook or Apple Mail, the steps for Gmail will be pretty similar. You can filter by sender, subject, group, or message contents.

Start by going to Gmail on the Web at mail.google.com.

Next, select a message by selecting the check-box next to the message subject. You can select more than one message, but make sure they all match the same filtering criteria. This is useful if you want to select messages from more than one sender and group them all as coworkers or friends.

Go to the pull-down menu at the top of your inbox labeled More actions.

Select Filter messages like these.
