By , About.com Guide

Definition: Orphan books are books that are out of print but still protected under copyright law.

Google reached a settlement agreement with the Author's Guild and the Association of American Publishers over Google Books. Under the proposed agreement, Google could publish orphan works in their entirety unless the rights holders came forward to forbid it.
