You may have heard the news that Google acquired photo editing software company Nik yesterday. Mostly I've heard this spun as an attempt to compete with Instagram. I disagree. Google could already compete with Instagram's easy sharing through Google+. This was about beefing up Google's strengths and adding more professional tools to their photo editing capabilities.
I look forward to playing with the Android version of Snapseed whenever it's released. The iPad version is quite fun.
