Definition: SearchMash was Google's experimental search interface. It does not have Google branding, except in links to the terms of service and privacy policy.
The idea of creating an unbranded site is that users will not expect the same behaviors from SearchMash as they do from Google's standard Web search, so the interface can be more objectively evaluated.
The name SearchMash may come from the term mashup, since the SearchMash search engine appears to be a mashup of both Google and non-Google information sources.
SearchMash is located at www.searchmash.com. It is no longer in use. The service "went the way of the dinosaurs" in 2008 at about the same time as SearchWiki was introduced to the main Google search interface.
