Top 5 Google Tools to Keep You on Track

By Marziah Karch, About.com

Are you going to lose weight, keep in touch with friends and family, take more photos, or get organized this year? Here are a few tools from Google that will help you keep those New Year's Resolutions.

1. Get Your Desktop Organized

Well, you don't actually have to organize your computer desktop in order to find things on it. Google Desktop can search through all the clutter on your hard drive to find files, images, and even email messages with the speed of Google.

2. Keep Your Mother From Worrying

Does your mother complain that you never call, you never write? You can start a blog and keep her up to date with the events in your life. You can make your blog public or private and update as many or as few of your family and acquaintances as you'd like. You could also start separate blogs for family and for friends.

3. Start New Habits and Keep a Regular Schedule

Have you signed up for gym membership or dance lessons? Google Calendar can help you keep your schedule and coordinate it with your friends and family. You can use it to keep track of those appointments, and you can even send reminders to your exercise buddy to make sure you both stick with your routine.

4. Keep on Top of Your Reading

Are you overwhelmed trying to keep up with blogs and news feeds? Use Google Reader to keep on top of your reading.

5. Meet New Friends

Orkut is Google's social networking tool. If you want to meet new people, you could set up a profile. Or if you want to meet people and share the common interest of soccer, give Orkut's cousin Joga a try.
