An easy way to keep track of news items on a particular subjects is by creating custom news feeds in Google News and then adding those feeds to Google Reader.
The first step is to go to Google News at news.google.com. You could create a news feed from this page if you wanted a general feed of all news items. If you'd like to keep track of specialized subjects, use Google News to search for it now. For this tutorial, I'll search for the keyword "autism."
