Definition: OpenSocial is a programming platform for social networks. It allows programmers to make a single application that will run on all the participating social networks.

OpenSocial was announced November 1st, 2007. The participating social networks include: Bebo, Engage.com, Friendster, hi5, Hyves, imeem, LinkedIn, mixi, MySpace, Ning, Oracle, orkut, Plaxo, Salesforce.com, Six Apart, Tianji, Viadeo, and XING.

Developers can find out more information and get access to APIs at code.google.com/apis/opensocial. Publishers can test their programs on a sandbox area at sandbox.orkut.com.

Also Known As: Maka-Maka (Code name during development)
Examples:
Several developers, including Flixster, FotoFlexer, iLike, RockYou, Slide, Theikos, and VirtualTourist have already built applications that use the OpenSocial APIs. Demos of their apps can be found on YouTube.
