How to Turn on Featured Layers in Google Earth
Customize Your View of Google Earth

By , About.com Guide

Google Earth is a virtual globe with a lot of information. If you viewed all the information at once, you couldn't actually see the planet. To keep the Earth organized, Google divided the information into layers.

Layers contain information such as restaurant guides, street names, terrain guides, and 3D buildings for select cities.

The layer area is on the lower left-hand side of Google Earth. Turn on layers by clicking on the check-box next to the layer name. Turn off layers the same way.

Some layers are grouped into folders. Turn on all items in the group by clicking on the check-box next to the folder. Expand the folder by clicking on the triangle next to the folder. You can use the expanded view to select or deselect individual layers.

Featured Content

Google Earth is a software download, but portions of the program get updated information from the Internet. One of the layer groups is featured content. Featured content is indicated by a blue star.

The featured content layer is periodically updated with different content, including links to audio and video files on the Web. Updates are done automatically when you start Google Earth, so keep checking back. You never know what the featured content will be each month.
