By , About.com Guide

Definition: Google Gears is a browser extension that allows Web-based applications to be used offline. The Web application must be specifically programmed to allow Gears to be used in this way, but the source code is freely available for developers to use.

The tool is still in the early stages of development as of June 2007 and the release is mainly intended for developers.

Gears is currently available for:

  • Firefox for Mac, Windows, and Linux
  • Internet Explorer 6 and above
  • Google Gears can be downloaded from gears.google.com.
