DMOZ - Open Directory Project

By Marziah Karch, About.com

Definition: The Open Directory Project, also known as DMOZ, is a volunteer-edited database of websites filed by category.

DMOZ stands for "Directory Mozilla." Mozilla was an early name for the Netscape Navigator Web browser. DMOZ is owned by Netscape Communications, but the information and database are freely available to other companies.

Using Google Directory allows you to rapidly search DMOZ.

Since DMOZ sites are reviewed by humans, they are usually of better quality than a random search of the Web. Listing a site in DMOZ may also boost its PageRank.

However, the voluntary submission and review process takes time to complete, so directory listings are not always fresh or complete.

DMOZ is available on the Web at www.dmoz.org.
