Gmail experienced an outage early this morning at around 9:30am GMT, which put it at the wee hours of the morning for those of us in the United States. The timing meant that UK and European users were the most inconvenienced, as the
Official Google Blog indicates by referring users to the Google Help
Centre.
Google Gears users could still read old messages and compose new ones, though they weren't delivered until the system went back online.
The problem was worldwide and affected both free Gmail users and Gmail used as part of Google Apps. This is precisely the sort of thing that Google doesn't want to happen as they try to convince small businesses that it's time to give up trying to manage email servers locally and start putting everything "in the cloud."
