ASUS to Run Android?

Saturday February 21, 2009
They're at least exploring the possibility, according to a Bloomberg.com article. ASUSTek makes the popular ASUS EEE PC, which is known for being both inexpensive and very small. I borrowed one for a weekend trip, and it easily fit in my purse.

Some EEE PCs come with Linux pre-installed, which keeps the cost low for these under $500 netbooks by eliminating the need to buy a Windows license and allowing them to run more smoothly on pared down hardware.

Android was designed as a Linux-based mobile operating system, but there's no reason it wouldn't run on netbooks. In fact, we already know it will. Would people buy a netbook that ran Android? It's a practical solution for a computer so small it doesn't have a DVD drive, but not everyone is ready for drastic changes. It would have to be very cheap and very fast to get people out of their Windows comfort zone.
