Android for Notebooks?

Friday January 2, 2009
VentureBeat rang in the New Year by posting a lengthy blog entry with pictures of an Asus EeePC running Android. It's pretty intriguing. Cell phones are too small to do any real typing, and netbooks could be about $100 cheaper without Windows. That's one of the reasons the least expensive EeePCs run Linux.

Android's Open Handset Alliance includes more than cell phone companies. Asus is even a member. Hmmmm.

Is 2009 the year of netbooks on Android? Maybe, but only after Android has time to mature as an OS. If you can't copy and paste, it's not ready for the desktop. Furthermore, people aren't usually interested in a challenge when they buy a new computer. Most of the new Asus Eee PCs run Windows. That's probably from consumer pressure, but it could change as consumers become familiar with Android. Especially if they don't want to spend the extra money on Windows.
