Disney in 3D With Google Earth

Thursday June 5, 2008
Google just announced that Disney's Walt Disney World in Orlando is now available in 3D as part of Google Earth.

The 3D park is already available in the latest version of Google Earth. Go to Walt Disney World, make sure you've turned on the 3D Buildings layer, and enjoy.

These are the most detailed buildings I've seen in Google Earth. The trees, rides, park benches, and attractions are all beautifully modeled and textured. The 3D layers do take some time to render on my machine, but I bet that's my video card's fault.

In addition to just showing the detailed 3D buildings, you can click on attractions for videos of the rides in action. They also list height requirements and other useful information about the rides.

Disney says this is the largest Google Earth corporate initiative, and I believe it. Using Disney's online booking tools and Google Earth, you could easily plan out an entire vacation from your computer. That is, of course, the point. I'm surprised more companies haven't latched onto the idea.
