Yahoo! to Microsoft: Not Yet

Monday February 11, 2008
As expected, Yahoo! told Microsoft that their buyout offer was too low. Yahoo! stock has risen since Microsoft made the offer, and Microsoft's has fallen. So they might have a point.

However, analysts agree that Yahoo!'s rejection was simply a negotiating tactic. Nobody else seems interested in buying the company, and as much as Google scrambled to find alternatives, it doesn't look like there are many to be found.

The big question seems to be not if Microsoft will buy the company but when and how aggressive will they have to be in order to do it.

Microsoft responded to Yahoo!'s rejection by saying the company, "reserves the right to pursue all necessary steps to ensure that Yahoo!’s shareholders are provided with the opportunity to realize the value inherent in our proposal." Meaning an aggressive takeover is not off the table.

Microsoft? Awesome? You’re one of their employees, aren’t you? And yeah, Yahoo! is. That was pretty much the point of the first paragraph.
