Google PC at Walmart

Thursday November 1, 2007
Walmart has started selling the Everex gPC for $199. The "g" stands for Google. The computer comes installed with the "gOS" operating system. It looks like it's a Google optimized version of Ubuntu Linux, but not official Goobuntu.

Everex clarified that "popular applications such as those from Google are an integral part of our product, however, gOS is an entity entirely independent from Google.

It's a little underpowered at only 512 MB of RAM, but it looks like a solid computer for those wanting to do basic computing tasks without using Windows or the Mac OS. Ubuntu is a good choice for mainstream Linux, but it will be interesting to see if the typical consumer is ready to try it.
