Wii, YouTube, and Google Video

Saturday December 23, 2006
Don't hate me too much, but I was lucky enough to get a new Wii in the mail yesterday.

Nintendo just started offering a beta test of an Opera-based Internet browser for Wiis on Friday. Ok, why would I want to surf the Web from my TV? I already have a laptop with wifi. I'd want to browse the Web to watch videos on my TV, of course! I think most people have much larger TV screens than they do computer screens.

I tested both of Google's video sites, YouTube and Google Video. Videos from both services played quite well. It would be nice to have them play full screen without huge Wii menu items in the way, but this was a good first step. Most of the videos aren't high enough resolution to really do full screen justice at this point, anyway. Expect this to change in the near future as users get better equipment for video creation and editing and more people get broadband Internet connections.

Expect more user-created content on your TV in 2007, whether it's your game console surfing the Web or a gadget to stream Web downloads to your TV. User created content is coming to your television, one way or another.

MiiTube offers a similar “YouTube on Wii” service, although I slightly prefer its interface, plus it has viral video charts and stuff.
