Google Does Charity Differently

Wednesday September 20, 2006
Google is sometimes hard to define. It's a search engine, it's a media company, it may even be classified as a mutual fund. Google's philanthropic branch, Google.org, is doing charity a little differently, too. Rather than apply for non-profit status, Google.org has elected to stay a for-profit company.

It is an interesting approach to charity, since many of us associate for-profit status with a certain amount of greed and excess. I'm not an accountant, but I have been involved with a few organizations seeking non-profit status. The IRS gave us more than just a few hoops to jump. I imagine that remaining for-profit really does lend some flexibility to the way the organization is run. It also means they have to pay taxes.
