Google Base to Become the Next eBay?

My husband has a web-based business, and as the technically inclined one in the family, it’s always been my job to promote his business with search engine optimization. One of the things I’ve done periodically is upload files into Google Base, so they will appear in Froogle searches.
It seems that Google Base has suddenly added support for rich text and html formatting. The photo is an example listing I created for my husband’s store, so I could play around with it.
This may lead credence to rumors that Google Checkout, Google's new online credit card payment method, may be part of an effort to set up an auction service to compete directly with eBay. EBay’s response to Google Checkout was to promptly ban it. Not surprising, since eBay owns competing payment method, PayPal.
A Google auction service would make a lot of sense. Google needs to find new ways to make money, since most Google services are currently offered free to consumers. Google makes most of their money from the sales of Internet ads.
